Father Fernando Suarez in Naga City

I have been to Naga City Cathedral several times. Most of the masses during Penafrancia is held outside the cathedral. It is so spacious that can accommodate several thousands of people.

NAGA CITY – Thousands of people in search of a miracle flocked to the Naga City Cathedral on Tuesday to listen to healing priest Fernando Suarez.

Venus L. Nava, 50, a bank employee who resigned from her job to take care of her 17-year-old son, said she sought a miracle for her wheelchair-bound child.

Nava, of Barangay Inarado, Daraga, Albay – 163 kilometers from this city – said she had been in the cathedral’s premises since Sunday to secure a good place for Suarez to notice them.

“I totally believe my son will be healed,” she said.

Nava said she had already spent all she had and that her husband had stopped working because of a stroke.

Dianne Mendoza, 22, brought her sister Eva, 20, who has been paralyzed for a year now. She positioned herself at the cathedral as early as 1 a.m.

Mendoza said she went home from Manila to bring to Suarez her younger sister, who was first diagnosed with tuberculosis of the bones.

Marites Toledo, 36, came with her bedridden 17-year-old son, who has been disabled since birth. She said she believed Suarez could do a miracle for him.

As early as 8 a.m., some 10,000 people massed at the church grounds, according to Msgr. Zosimo ZaƱado, parish priest. He said the place could accommodate some 20,000 and he expected the crowd to swell.

He said City Hall was helping control the crowd.

Mayor Jesse Robredo said some 400 personnel from the Army, police and the Naga City Public Safety Office were mobilized.

Suarez arrived from Iriga City at 11:15 a.m. to a cheering crowd.

Saying the power to heal belongs to Jesus Christ and that he is only a medium, Suarez told them to pray hard for their wellness.

Suarez asked the people to touch the ailing body part and prayed over them.
